Chapter Thirty-Seven

Now

Aimee steeled herself as butterflies fluttered in her stomach. She stood up behind the bar, hastily stepping over towards the side door to make it look as if she’d just walked in and not been crouched behind it. DI Fields’s back was turned, his head still bowed low over his phone, which illuminated his face oddly in the fairly dim lights of the room.

‘Hello, Detective.’

DI Fields snapped his head up. ‘Aimee? What the hell are you doing here?’ His voice had a sharp edge to it; for a split second he reminded her of Sergeant Miller when he would bark orders or shout at her for being too slow.

‘I needed to speak to you and I was told you’d be here when I phoned the station, so I thought I’d pop down. I only live up the road.’

DI Fields narrowed his eyes as she stopped in front of him. ‘You thought you’d pop down to a crime scene, a crime scene that clearly has barricades and yellow and black tape all around it? How did you even get in here?’

‘Through the side door,’ she answered as if it was no big deal.

‘Uh-huh.’ He didn’t look convinced, nor did he look particularly happy, but Aimee quickly continued, hoping to distract his train of thought.

‘I needed to ask you about something.’

‘What?’

‘It’s about Jones. You said you have proof that he was seen here around the time the body was found, or close to it. But who saw him and what was he doing? Did you manage to find the blonde woman he spoke about?’

‘Has he said anything else to you?’

‘No, nothing,’ she lied.

‘Yes, I’ve spoken to the blonde woman. Her name’s Amanda Wilson. She works here as a waitress and sings twice a month, but on the night of the murder she wasn’t singing. It was her night off. She was chatting with Tom Jones instead.’

‘So she corroborated his story that he was just having a drink?’

‘Yeah, a few too many drinks, but she said that she saw him leave by himself around midnight.’

Aimee sensed there was something on the tip of his tongue, so she pushed him a little further. ‘Maybe we should check the CCTV footage in this place.’

‘I have it already. I was just checking my emails on my phone when you walked in.’

‘Can I see?’ Aimee gave him what she hoped was an innocent smile, but DI Fields frowned at her.

‘Aimee … I know I said I needed your help, but—’

‘I’ll be able to look at it next week when I go back to work, along with all the other evidence you’ve gathered. It’s kind of my job … so you may as well show me now … Detective.’ She wasn’t sure where her bravery was coming from, but it felt good to stand up for herself, for once. She bit her lip as DI Fields raised his chin ever so slightly.

‘I’m probably going to regret this,’ he muttered as he tapped his phone a few times. Aimee’s heart lurched in her chest as she stepped forwards.
